We spoke with Rebecca and Karl from Wild Flower Illustration Co, a couple who turned their passion for post into a thriving small business that honours the art of letter writing.

Tell us a bit about yourselves and how your love for letters evolved?

Rebecca: When I was young, I had a Great Uncle who was an artist and used to send me art supplies or paintings in post. Seeing my name and address inked onto a brown-paper package made me so indescribably happy. I really think this is where my love for letters came from. I’ve always kept boxes of letters and cards that I’ve been sent, or handwriting I loved. There’s something so special about knowing someone took their time to write a message just for you.

My love for letter writing evolved alongside my love for painting – they both felt like ways of slowing down and noticing the details of life. My family all leave each other notes now - even our six year old. Finding a note that reads “I love you Mummy” brings me such joy.

What makes a great letter?

Rebecca: I think the best letters are the ones where you can hear the personality of the person writing, their voice in your head as you read. A great letter doesn’t have to be long or profound, it just has to be authentic and from the heart.

Where’s your favourite place and time to write, set the scene?

Karl: I’m an early riser and like to be up before the rest of the house. I will brew some coffee and sit downstairs with the dogs and begin to write. For me, it's the slower part of the day when everything is soft. The dining room walls are hit with the beautiful early morning glow from the sun. I’ll often write from the armchair in the corner of the room with some classical music playing. I don’t write every day, but when I do, it’s deliberate. I like the quiet of it.

Is there a certain etiquette one should follow when sending cards?

Karl: The best cards are always the ones that feel considered. You don’t need to follow strict etiquette, I think people appreciate imperfection. But taking the time to write more than a line or two, or to share something real, does make all the difference. I believe that’s what people hold onto.

Are cards strictly for occasions or something to embrace all year round?

Rebecca: I honestly think cards are even more meaningful when they’re sent ‘just because’. Of course I love a birthday card or a thank you note, but there’s something extra special about receiving a card out of the blue. It says, “I thought of you today.” I keep a stack of general notecards and seasonal writing paper for this very reason. I think sending a card can be a way of anchoring yourself too – of pausing, reflecting, and reaching out, especially when you feel a craving for connection.

So many of us now live life at such a fast pace, that the idea of sending a letter can seem like time we haven’t got. What’s your advice for embracing the art and making time to slow down?

Karl: I find that when I do sit down to write, it slows everything else down too. It’s one of the few things that pulls your attention fully into the moment. My advice would be: don’t overthink it, you don’t need the perfect words or the perfect time. Just begin! The rest will follow and the more you practise the better you will get. The world can often seem fast paced but there is time. Start small and it won't be long until the writing and words come easy, choose some high quality stationery and a nice pen and ink. If you have the space a writing desk and comfortable chair will work wonders.
