Supporting the joy of gardening

We are as passionate about nature as we are about our beautiful furniture, so it comes naturally that we are keen to support the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the wonderful work they do in the UK.

Stressless® is a proud supporter of Hampton Court, Tatton and Wisley Flower Shows and we have been welcoming tired visitors onto our stand for the last three years.

With over 200 years of gardening knowledge, the RHS is here to help people at every stage of their gardening journey. In this article, we will explore the diverse initiatives and programs undertaken by the RHS to spread gardening wisdom, foster community engagement, and champion horticulture. To provide you with first-hand insights, we have had the opportunity to speak with Victoria Dowling, the Shows Business Development Manager at the RHS, who will share more about their remarkable work.

— Can you give our readers a summary of what it is that the RHS does?

— The RHS is more than just a gardening charity; it is a vibrant community that is passionate about sharing its love for gardening. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the wonders of gardening, whether they are beginners or seasoned green thumbs. That is why we offer a wide range of services and resources to both our members and the wider public, Victoria explains.

Let's take a closer look at how the RHS fulfils its mission in five keyways:

Shows and Gardens: Millions of visitors flock to the RHS flower shows every year to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and find inspiration for their own gardens. The shows are held at prestigious locations like Chelsea, Hampton Court Palace, and Tatton Park.

Learning Programs: The RHS offers a range of qualifications, from the Level 1 Certificate to the prestigious Master of Horticulture, that provide a solid foundation for aspiring horticulturists. The gardeners of the future are also nurtured through different initiatives which introduces thousands of children to the joys of growing plants.

Community Transformation: Gardening has the power to transform not just individual lives, but entire communities. The RHS supports volunteer gardening groups that enhance public spaces, bringing people together, improving our environment, and creating thriving habitats for wildlife.

Showcasing Horticulture: Over 30 million people visit the RHS website each year, seeking expert advice and finding inspiration for their gardening endeavours. Their libraries house a remarkable collection of horticultural literature, as well as digitized botanical paintings and photographs that are accessible to all.

Advancing Knowledge Through Science: The RHS believe in the power of science to find gardening solutions to today's most pressing issues. Their team of dedicated scientists and PhD students are at the forefront of research, tackling challenges ranging from climate change to mental health. By deepening the understanding of horticulture, we can create a brighter future for both plants and people.

"The RHS is more than just a gardening charity"

Victoria Dowling, the Shows Business Development Manager at the RHS.
— The Flower Shows are internationally renowned. How did they start and what was the idea behind them?

— The RHS Shows began with the Great Spring Show at Chelsea in 1913, captivating visitors worldwide. Events like the Chelsea Flower Show have inspired millions to engage in gardening, benefiting their health and the environment. The success of these shows owes much to the contributions of growers, designers, landscape teams, partners, and RHS members, Victoria answers.

The Chelsea Flower Show, possibly the most famous among RHS shows, takes around four weeks to build after over a year of planning. Despite challenges like unpredictable weather, the RHS, with its century of experience and exceptional teams, consistently delivers an extraordinary gardening event.

— What is the vision of the RHS as a charity and do you think this has changed over the last decade?

— RHS relies on its 600,000 members to support its charitable work. Members enjoy unlimited entry to RHS Gardens, free access to Partner Gardens, reduced-rate tickets to RHS Flower Shows, workshops, and family-friendly events. The Garden magazine provides monthly inspiration, and members receive personalized gardening advice from experts through the RHS The Garden app. Additionally, members can participate in the free seeds scheme, selecting up to 15 packets of flower seeds, Victoria explains.

As a charity, the RHS envisions a world where gardening is embraced as a joyful and fulfilling way of life, fostering healthier lives, stronger communities, and thriving environments. With their vision and mission, the RHS continues to inspire people to experience the joy and benefits of gardening, nurturing a love for nature, and creating a sustainable and beautiful world for future generations.
