Our home in Sykkylven

600 kilometres north of Oslo, you arrive at the municipality of Sykkylven. Only 7,625 people live here on almost 340 square kilometres, and yet the region is the centre of an extraordinary success story in the international furniture industry. It was here that Jens E. Ekornes was raised and had to find a way to make a living in a time when there was no abundance of consumer goods and employment was limited. The sons of Sykkylven who did not inherit the family farm became artisans.

50 years of Craftmanship

Craftsmanship is the result of several factors, all of which must fall into place to ensure quality products. The sense of care that lies in the hands of the employees is based on generations of knowledge about furniture and on a culture that, for five decades, has been carried by solid principles for the design and processing of the materials. Experienced specialists in woodworking, designers, engineers, steel benders and seamstresses work side by side to create the most comfortable chairs and sofas. The entire production line is imbued with accomplished craftsmanship that goes hand in hand with modern technology.

50 years of Norwegian Design

It’s impossible to describe Norwegian design without taking nature into account. Norwegian design is carried by the same sense of functionality and good materials as the broader Nordic design tradition, but along the fjords, Nordic minimalism is strongly influenced by the magnificent nature. This provides more than a touch of poetry and freedom. However, it still requires hard work to turn it into excellent products.

50 years of Innovation

Stressless® was introduced as the first recliner designed to meet your body’s need for movement and support when seated. The recliner set a new standard in comfort and functionality and offered a wide range of patented features, from the glide system that follows your movements, to the Plus™ system for correct neck and lumbar support. The design philosophy behind Stressless® rests on a number of basic principles and there are decades of studies of the human anatomy behind every single product. For Stressless®, it is crucial not to design objects, but rather experiences, and a key to achieving that is to start from the inside.
